OLAP server not essential

 

For relatively smaller databases such as work group or departmental databases, ReportWorks does not require a dedicated OLAP server. The built-in cube editor connects to the RDBMS directly and builds the cube itself without having to use the OLAP Server. It has its own Cube Editor to manage measures and hierarchies in the cube, so that business users can set up dimensions, measures and hierarchies on their own on the fly during run-time. This direct report generation feature increases the deployment velocity by several folds.

However, for large databases it is recommended to use OLAP server for better scalability and performance.
